Ingredients (Serves 6)
For the filling:
- 5–6 medium apples (Honeycrisp, Gala, or Granny Smith), peeled and sliced
- 2 tbsp lemon juice
- ¼ cup brown sugar
- 2 tbsp granulated sugar
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- ¼ tsp nutmeg
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tbsp cornstarch
- For the topping:
- ¾ cup old-fashioned oats
- ½ cup all-purpose flour
- ½ cup brown sugar
- ½ tsp cinnamon
- ¼ tsp salt
- 6 tbsp cold butter, cubed
Instructions
Preheat oven: to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9×9-inch baking dish.
Make the filling: In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with lemon juice, both sugars, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, and cornstarch. Spread evenly in the baking dish.
Make the topping: In another bowl, mix oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Add cold butter and use your fingers or a pastry cutter to blend until crumbly.
Assemble: Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apples.
Bake: 40–45 minutes, until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbling around the edges.
Cool slightly: Let sit for 10 minutes before serving.
Serving Suggestion
Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of caramel sauce. It also pairs beautifully with whipped cream and a hot cup of coffee or apple cider.
